Movie Sketch Project #6

Well to tell the family secret, I kind of love anime. Part of that love stems from my initial forays into drawing, during which I taught myself to draw figures by copying images of my favorite anime and manga characters (it was that or X-Men comics). This week I watched two new anime films, one of which was a very strange and badass doomsday action flick with unpleasant art styles, and the other had traditional beautiful character design with attention to detail. I chose the latter for this week's Movie Sketch Project inspiration. Sorry, Fist of the North Star fans (if you're out there).

I didn't love the script of Evangelion 1.0 but I really appreciated the visuals, and I hadn't drawn in an anime style for so long after pounding those stylistic tendencies out of myself through years of art classes. Ahead you'll find an image of Rei, the blue-haired mysterious pilot lady, and her Eva mech. Fair warning: It is really hard to draw complex mechs when there don't seem to be any decent reference images online, so I kind of had to make up the robot portion of this picture. Also I couldn't find a clear image of the Japanese poster, so if I copied the kanji incorrectly, I apologize. I did my best.

Anyway. Go see and let me know what you think!

And don't forget to check out my etsy shop, where I'm selling Movie Sketch Project stuff (including this one) for affordable prices.
